Children’s authors need more than attractive pictures. They need a partner who understands young readers, page turns, illustration workflow, inclusive representation, print production, and the emotional weight of the story.
1. Choose relevant experience
Review children’s covers and interior samples. Look for readable text, consistent characters, age-appropriate pacing, inclusive imagery, and clean print preparation.
2. Ask about the complete workflow
Clarify manuscript review, page mapping, illustration, approvals, layout, proofreading, proof copies, revisions, and upload guidance before production begins.
3. Value lived understanding
For stories involving autism, disability, caregiving, or family advocacy, lived experience can support more thoughtful questions and respectful representation.
4. Use Atlanta connections wisely
Local authors may plan school visits, community launches, nonprofit partnerships, and Atlanta-area events. Build those goals into the format and timeline early.
5. Protect the future of the book
Keep access to your files and accounts, understand illustration rights, and choose a trim size and price that support your long-term distribution plan.
